The Pledge: Fulfilling Promises Made To You (Part Two)

Maya, sensing that the mood was already sour, suggested that we go kayaking instead. Grateful for the interruption, I hastily agreed. So the four of us packed up our bags and went to the kayaking site. I could feel Fen glowering at me the entire time and tried my best to ignore it.

We decide to rent the couple’s kayak. So, Maya and Matt, Fen, and I boarded our respective kayaks and were on our way. As soon as we gained some distance from the others, Fen’s interrogation began. “Are you trying to embarrass me?  And what was that show you were putting on? You’re testing me, aren’t you? Do you want to see what I can do? Well, you wait until we get home!” he yelled menacingly.

A Foretaste Of Thing To Come

“I don’t know what I did wrong,” – I offered weakly as the tears streamed down my face. I tried to paddle through the tears, but it proved increasingly difficult. At first, I thought it was because I was crying. Then I turned my head slightly only to realize that Fen had stopped paddling. Instead, he was staring at me with a smirk on his face.

I asked him if he was going to help me paddle back to shore. But he looked at me and continued to scowl. At that moment, a chill ran down my spine, and I knew I should turn around and paddle as best I could back to shore using my strength.

The Long Ride Home

We finally make it back to shore, and Matt and Maya decide that we should head home. Part of me wanted to plead with them to stay, but I knew I could not risk it. The ride home was excruciatingly silent. So, I wondered if the others sensed anything amiss. But neither broached the subject later that day nor since. We part ways with the others, and Fen and I make our way back to the apartment. As soon as we enter the apartment, Fen grabs my hand and takes me to our bedroom. It happened so fast; I cannot remember if he closed the door or how we made it to the bedroom so quickly. All I knew was that I was lying on the bed, and Fen was on top of me, pinning my hands to the bed.

A Promise Fulfilled

The position he held me on the bed was painful, so I cried out in pain. I wiggled underneath him, trying to reposition myself to alleviate my pain. But he kept holding me down. So I screamed for him to get off me, but my pleas went unheard. Instead, he sneered between clenched teeth, “I promised you, didn’t I, that I would make you pay when we got home.”

His words paralyzed me with fear. I looked up at his face, terrified at what I saw. He had a menacing grin on his face, and at that moment, I knew I was looking into the face of evil. He locked both my arms over my head with one hand and squeezed my cheeks together with his other hand. I could taste the blood from where my teeth cut into the inside of my mouth. I didn’t know which pain I should react to, the force of his body, the wrenching of my arms, or the pressure on my face. In a word, the one who promised to love me was terrorizing me. He traded in the fulfillment of one promise for another – one that almost cost me my life.
