When Your Tech Betrays You: Need A Locksmith, Anyone?

Does anyone have one of those keyless door locks? You know the ones that you key in your code, and the door unlocks for you? Great tech, isn’t it? I think that it is just wonderful. I am a gadget person. I love tech. Any gadget that could get me there faster, more efficiently, sign me up!

I particularly love the fact that with some alarm monitoring companies, you have the option to add the door lock to your system to lock and unlock your door right from an app on your phone. I wish you could see my face every time I unlocked and locked my door remotely – sheer delight! I mean, who wouldn’t love the convenience of not having to hunt for keys? Ah, me!

My particular door lock operated with four AA batteries, which I would only have to change every six months to one year. Honestly, it may have been longer than that because I would generally see a red light blinking to let me know that the batteries are ready to be changed. Also, I rarely used the front door, I typically entered and exited my home through the garage, so I used the front door mostly on the weekends when checking the mail or if a friend is picking me up.

What Happens When A Good Deed Goes Terribly Wrong

I decided to take the day off. I noticed that the mailperson delivered a mail package for one of the neighbors five houses away to my door. The package was cool to the touch, so I assumed that it was a perishable item and decided to take the package to the neighbor’s house. The day was still cool enough outside, so I decided to walk rather than drive—mistake number one.

I grabbed my phone and my driver’s license as ID to show the neighbor. I did not take anything else with me since I could unlock my door and disarm my alarm remotely from my phone —mistake number two. I armed the alarm, exited through the front door, locked the door by touching the lock button on the door, and was on my way to deliver the package to my neighbor. My neighbor was not at home. So I left the package by the front door just as the mailperson would do and was on my way home.

I get to my front door, disarm my alarm and proceed to unlock the door, and surprise, surprise! My door has an error code. I tried to enter the code manually and, you guessed it, nothing! I was locked out of the house with only my phone and my driver’s license. My car was neatly tucked in the garage. My car keys were in my bedroom, along with my purse, wallet, and, oh yes, the actual keys to the house.

In my tech-savviness, I was left out in the cold, locked out of my own home, hungry and penniless, foiled by my nemesis —batteries. Here I was doing a good deed, only to be upstaged by dead batteries. After speaking with the alarm company, my only recourse was to call a locksmith, LAM.

The locksmith helped me to break into my backdoor since this was the only option available to us. I am sure he will remember my LAM moment for a long time. I certainly will not forget it any time soon.

I hope my Tech Betrayal LAM moment made you chuckle today. Don’t forget to share your own LAM moments with us!
